Dyersburg, TN - May 04, 2014

New Challenge

ST Sunday Rider is the beginning of a new blog project for me.  The goal of the blog is three fold.

  1. Go for rides on my 2006 Honda ST1300
  2. Photograph the process with my DSLR - Nikon D3200 and iPhone5
  3. Visit small interesting towns in Tennessee and highlight some interesting facts about the small town.
As you can see, the goals are simple. Ride, enjoy the ride, be safe, return home safely in the 4hr ride limit,  learn a little bit about this state, and sharpen my creative skills with the camera.

My first ride starts tomorrow with a destination of Dyersburg, TN - May 4, 2014.
Missouri Crossing

Wasn't expecting to see the Missouri border but here I am. Sometimes the good thing about riding a motorcycle, is that you ride.  "Just riding" can sometimes lead you places you weren't really expecting to be.....but there you are.

Over the Bridge and into Dyersburg, TN

Well I made it to the town square of Dyersburg, TN.  I was pleasantly surprised to find that it had a town square.  Town Squares seem to be popular in this region and some of them have great looking historic courthouses.

Late Lunch in Ripley, TN

Was suppose to stop in Dyersburg for breakfast but decided to continue on.  Stopped in Ripley and believe I found the slowest McDonalds in the area

Oh well.  Still enjoying the ride.  Going to leave here and head for Henning, TN. This is the birth place for author Alex Haley.

Alex Haley Historic Childhood Home

Was able to stop here on route back home.  It's located in the middle of a nondescript neighborhood in Henning, TN.  Alex Haley is the author of the book "Roots". The book was made into a television movie series.  A book that was written based on the childhood stories that he learned from his family while sitting on this porch as a child.

Henning, TN - Main Street

As I left Alex Haley home, I was looking at some of the older homes in the vicinity and found my way onto Main St. This was a pleasant surprise to me, as I was just looking to head home.

Main St reminded me of the old westerns where you ride your horse up to the salon and tie it up right in front of the door.  You could walk down main street on the raised walkway - this just had that feel to me. I felt like I should tie my STeed up, put on my cowboy hat, six shooter and spurs.

I am not sure how the town is surviving. I will have to do a little research on the economics of this town because I don't believe the Alex Haley tourism is enough to support the town.

This was a great little historic town to visit.  To read more about Henning, TN - click on link
